The migrating motor complex (MMC) is one of our body’s most important mechanisms for proper digestion. This mechanism refers to the periodic mobility pattern that occurs in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the stomach and small intestine, during the fasting state.
The migrating motor complex (MMC) is a cyclical sequence of fasting gastrointestinal motility. In man its periodicity is approximately 90 minutes, but there is great variability [ 1 , 2 ]. It is most commonly seen, and thus has been most studied, in the proximal small intestine but can be identified more proximally in the lower esophagus and as far distally as the ileum [ 3 ].
The migrating motor complex (MMC) is one of our body’s most important mechanisms for proper digestion. This mechanism refers to the periodic mobility pattern that occurs in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the stomach and small intestine, during the fasting state. The migrating motor complex (MMC), also called the migrating myoelectric complex, describes the pattern of motility during the interdigestive period. As discussed in Chapter 8.2, this stereotypical pattern consists of three phases over a period of 85–115 minutes. In the small intestine, these motor complexes migrate in an aborad direction, and in the colon in both orad and aborad directions. The mechanisms of initiation and migration of these complexes are best understood in the small intestine.

In clinical motility research, the study of the migrating motor complex in the small bowel has revealed its ability to act as a retroperistaltic pump in the proximal
Poor migrating motor complex (MMC) function, or the reduced electrical waves that help regulate several important functions of the gut, can cause SIBO. #dralexjimenez #functional #neurology # Migrating motor complexes (or migrating myoelectric complex or migratory motor complex or migratory myoelectric complex or MMC) are waves of electrical activity that sweep through the intestines in a regular cycle during fasting. These motor complexes trigger peristaltic waves, which facilitate transportation of indigestible substances such as bone, fiber, and foreign bodies from the stomach Mechanism of Interdigestive Migrating Motor Complex Toku Takahashi Department of Surgery, Medical College of Wisconsin and Zablocki VA Medical Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Migrating motor complex (MMC) is well characterized by the appearance of gastrointestinal contractions in the interdigestive state. Interdigestive migrating motor complex (MMC) is a pattern of cyclic motor activity of the stomach and small intestine during digestion . It consists of periods of inactivity alternating with segmental or propulsive contractions and generally originates in the gastric antrum or duodenum, spreads abroad, and reaches as far as the colon.

It is called the Migrating Motor Complex (MMC). You can help control your MMC — and thus treat your IBS — by using prokinetics. The Migrating Motor Complex Unlike peristalsis which is triggered when you eat, taste or thinking about food in order to start the digestion system, the MMC occurs after you haven’t eaten food in a while. Resolor (Procalopride), used as a prokinetic agent in preventing SIBO, is a high affinity 5-HTP4 receptor agonist.

And then the migrating motor complex can’t be produced properly. And what studies have shown is that the damage has to reach a certain threshold where these cells are diminishing. And then that will really, really slow down the migrating motor complex. The Migrating Motor Complex (MMC) is a pattern of smooth muscle contractions that start in the stomach and move through the intestines. Deficient activity of the Migrating Motor Complex is considered to be a key underlying cause of SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). The migrating motor complex is different from regular motility because it isn’t stimulated by contents in the gut. In fact, the migrating motor complex happens 3 hours after your last meal. So what exactly is the migrating motor complex? The MMC is a cyclical pattern of electromechanical activity that is observed in the smooth muscle of the GI tract between meals. You can think of the MMC as a broom that sweeps the small intestines clean between meals. Migrating Motor Complex: A Critical Motility Promoter The migrating motor complex (MMC) is a cyclic and recurring pattern of motility that occurs in the stomach and small intestine during periods of fasting and is interrupted following food consumption 3.
